Donald Murray Donald Murray, born in Edinburgh in 1940, is a native Gaelic speaker. At Edinburgh College of Art he specialised in calligraphy, graduating in 1962; a year of post-graduate work followed. Numerous institutions and civic authorities have commissioned his work. He was head of Art at Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen from 1983 to 2000.

Louise Donaldson Louise Donaldson studied at Newcastle School of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. She worked in Edinburgh as a graphic designer before moving to the Borders in 1989. Donaldson worked in Adult Education as Tutor of Calligraphy. She got a Diploma in Calligraphy from Roehampton Institute, London. Her work includes commissions from Glenlivet Distilleries, Royal Scottish Museum, the Scottish Arts Council and the Scottish Executive.

Réiltín Murphy Born in Dublin, Réiltín Murphy has a diploma in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, a BA in Calligraphy and Bookbinding from the Roehampton Institute in London and an MA from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Réiltín has exhibited widely in Ireland and abroad and is represented in the National Irish Visual Arts Library’s collection.

David McGrail Maisitheoir agus dearthóir grafach gairmiúil is ea David McGrail. David McGrail David McGrail is a professional graphic designer and illustrator. He has an interest in calligraphy and draws on traditional techniques, contemporary art, and philosophy from both East and West. His work has been published in journals and exhibited in the USA, England, Germany and Australia and is in collections in Ireland, England, the USA and Hong Kong.

Ansin rinne sí sainstaidéar ar pheannaireacht, ag déanamh foghlaim ar litreoireacht agus ar leabharcheangal san Ostair agus sa Ghearmáin. Ta sí fostaithe mar oide cuartaíochta i Roinn na Dearc- Chumarsáide sa Choláiste Náisiúnta Ealaíne is Deartha, Baile Átha Cliath.

Frances Breen Frances Breen was born in Wexford and lives and works in Austria and Ireland. She graduated in Graphic Design from the National College of Art and Design and then specialised in calligraphy, studying lettering and bookbinding in Austria and Germany. She is a guest tutor in the Department of Visual Communications at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

Susan Leiper Susan Leiper was born in 1955 and books are the pivot of her career. She edits books on Chinese art and is the author of Precious Cargo. As a calligrapher she makes Chinese-inspired calligraphic books and works to commission. Susan now lives in Edinburgh.

Ann Bowen Ann Bowen studied calligraphy at Reigate School of Art & Design, and got a Scrivners Award in 1996. Bowen works full time as a freelance calligrapher, and teaches part time. Her book on callligraphy is published this year. Exhibitions include – ‘Art in Action’, Dartington Cider Press, Wolsey Fine Arts, IPIDEC - Paris, Craft Salon Group, Alexander Llewellyn Art Gallery and others.

Donald Addison Donald Addison, who lives in Aberdeen, is a graphic designer and printmaker and formerly a senior lecturer at Gray’s School of Art. He is currently working in the field of Art for Hospitals.

Tim O’Neill (Photo: J Cox fsc) Tá Tim O’Neill ar dhuine des na peannairí is mó cáil in Éirinn agus múineann sé scríobh sa stíl Cheilteach. Tá léachtaí tugtha aige san Eoraip agus ins na Stáit Aontaithe ar lámhscríbhinní meánaoiseacha. Tim O’Neill Tim O’Neill is one of Ireland’s best known calligraphers and is a teacher of Celtic style script. As an historian he has lectured on medieval manuscripts in Europe and the USA. He has published a study of medieval scribes and a guide to Celtic script and design. In 1997 British Airways commissioned him to design a Celtic-style tailfin for their aircraft.
