Valparaiso: Fá thuairim Bhéarla Oiliféir Shinseoin Uí Ghógartaigh Valparaiso
Tháinig long ó Valparaiso,
Scaoileadh téad a seol sa chuan,
Chuir a hainm dom i gcuimhne
Ríocht na gréine, tír na mbua.

‘Gluais,’ ar sí, ‘ar thuras fada
Liom ó scamall is ó cheo;
Tá fé shleasa gorm-Ándes
Cathair scáfar, glé mar sheod.’

Ach bhíos óg is ní imeoinnse,
Am an dóchais, tús mo shaoil,
Chreideas fós go raibh i ndán dom
Iontaisí na ndán is na scéal.

Ghluais an long thar linnte mara
Fad ó shin is a crann mar ór,
Scríobh a scéal ar phár na hoíche,
Ard i rian na réiltean mór.

Fillfidh sí arís chugam, áfach,
Chífead cathair bhán fén sléibh
Le hais Mara na Síochána,
Creidim fós, beagnach, a Dhé.
A ship from Valparaiso came
And in the bay her sails were furled.
Her name reminded me of a sunny clime,
A land of opportunity.

‘Come travel with me,’ she said
‘From gloom and wet;
You will find beneath the Andes blue
A sheltered city, bright as a jewel.’

But I was young and would not go,
A time of hope, the beginning of my life.
I still believed that the wonders
Of song and story were still in store for me.

The ship sailed over the wide ocean
Long since and her mast glittered like gold.
She traced her story on the night’s scroll,
High in the track of the great stars.

She will return to me, however,
I shall see a fair city at the foot of the mountain
Beside the Pacific Ocean –
By God, I still believe it yet.
